Tweety Bird Wisdom By: Kimberley Payne

Tweety Bird Wisdom

Many times when I am waiting in line, I will look around and read all the signs posted. There are many things to read while I wait at the grocery store, the bank, and at the doctor’s office. Just the other day, I was waiting at a print shop and so I did my usual scan of the walls and counter tops for stuff to catch my eye. This place had many “funnies” posted and one in particular made me laugh out loud. It had a picture of Tweety Bird with a little halo and wings. It read, “Dear Lord, so far today I am doing all right. I have not gossiped, lost my temper, been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish or self-indulgent. I have not whined, complained, cursed or eaten any chocolate. I have charged nothing on my credit card. But I will be getting out of bed in a minute, and I think that I will really need your help then.”

I could’ve shouted an “Amen” to that poster. Some days, it can seem like the only way to get through my day is to stay in bed. However, that is not the answer. The answer is to seek out God’s help early in the day, continue throughout the day in conversation with Him, and end the day in earnest prayer with God. I really need God’s help all day, everyday.

In the Bible, the book of Psalms is full of cries for help. Many authors contributed to the psalms, and they were written in different time periods. We can read how the psalmists trusted God as their protector and relied on Him for their strength. Today, we can do the same. “In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.” (Psalm 18:6) “O Lord my God, I called to you for help and you healed me.” (Psalm 30:2) “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1) And one of my personal favourites is found in Psalm 121:1-2 “I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

It took Tweety Bird to remind me that I need to constantly and consistently rely on God for my help.

“Give us help for the hard task; human help is worthless. In God we’ll do our very best; he’ll flatten the opposition for good.” (Psalm 60:12 The Message)

Kimberley,
Great story! I have found if I take a few minutes in the morning before I get up to pray and focus, I stay more centered throughout the day.
